Mathematics is both interesting and enjoyable. The aim of this department is to enable all students to work to the maximum of their ability and potential while providing them with the basic mathematical skills needed in everyday life. Students have the opportunity to work ahead at their own pace and explore more challenging mathematical ideas. Regard is also given to the need to offer courses suitable to the large number of students who need Mathematics in their move on into Higher Education.
Mathematics is taught within form groups in Year 7. Thereafter it is set into ability groups across each year up to Year 11.
All students aim for the Higher Tier of the GCSE examination with 20% coursework. Some are entered for the Intermediate Tier.
In the Sixth Form Mathematics is usually a popular ‘A’ level. Students can choose any combination of Pure Mathematics, Mechanics and Statistics leading to the Edexcel examinations. This can range from a single AS level in one of these subjects to two full A levels in separate Mathematics and Further Mathematics.
