The AS/A level course is designed to offer a study of politics and political debate. Emphasis is given to contemporary issues and the changing constitution, both within the UK and in the context of the European Union. The course develops student capacity for critical thinking, and will help them to perceive their field of study in a broader perspective.

The course is best suited to those who have an interest in the traditions and culture of the United Kingdom, a willingness to study current affairs and the capacity for wider reading to support class teaching. A variety of speakers from across the political spectrum, and visits, form an important part of the course and students are encouraged to research, prepare, and engage in political discussion and debate.

Students will also have the opportunity to sit the AS in Citizenship and the AS in European Studies, both of which are covered by the Government and Politics specification.
